Butte Emergency Operations Center

Amount:  $800,000
City and County of Butte-Silver Bow (Butte, MT)
Located in the Intermountain Seismic Belt and home to one of the largest Superfund sites in the United States, Butte-Silver Bow is at an elevated risk for a catastrophic natural disaster. The City recently conducted a formal analysis of the existing EOC, as recommended by the Department of Homeland Security. This study indicated a deficiency in all critical areas: the physical facility lacks adequate space, sustainability, survivability, and it lacks interoperable communications equipment. Funds will be used entirely for construction.

Whitefish Emergency Operations Center

Amount:  $900,000
City of Whitefish (Whitefish, MT)
A new emergency operations center (EOC) in Whitefish, Mont., will provide interoperability and improve efficiency in performance of inter-agency services with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Border Patrol (Whitefish is 60 miles from the Canadian border), FBI, Secret Service, DEA, Montana Highway Patrol, Flathead Valley Office of Emergency Services, Flathead County Sheriff, and local cities, Kalispell and Columbia Falls. Funds will be used entirely for planning, design and construction; the land is city-owned. It will allow advancement of public and private sector partnerships, establish an emergency operations command center which can be used for police major crimes investigation, and fire emergencies; especially during wildland and forest fire season. The positioning of the EOC will allow for enhanced radio communications throughout the Flathead Valley and to the Canadian border, in conjunction with Northern Tier and Interoperability Montana.
