Tester Statement on Successful Non-Binding Budget Resolution Vote

U.S. Senator Jon Tester released the following statement after the Senate successfully passed a non-binding budget resolution:

“To grow our economy and create good-paying jobs, it’s critical that we meet the growing needs of our state by cutting taxes for working families, increase access to affordable housing and child care, and provide our veterans the care they deserve. I voted to continue debate on the budget reconciliation legislation, but to earn my final support, any final bill will need to responsibly meet the needs of Montana families and businesses.”

A budget resolution is distinct from a bill in that it is not legislation, it does not get sent to the President for his signature, and it does not carry the force of law. A budget resolution is non-binding document that has no effect on government policies or the laws of the United States.

Passing the budget resolution allows Congress to unlock a procedural mechanism called “reconciliation.” Reconciliation will allow the Senate to move forward on reconciliation legislation that addresses critical issues facing Montanans, like the lack of affordable housing across the state and the rising costs of childcare and senior care in rural America.
