Tester Secures $1 Million for Affordable Housing on Flathead Reservation

Senator Announces Grant for CSKT Housing Authority

(U.S. Senate) – U.S. Senator Jon Tester today announced more than $1 million to build and maintain affordable housing for families living on the Flathead Reservation.

The announcement comes after Tester joined Housing Secretary Ben Carson in visiting the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes last August. The grant is funded through the Indian Housing Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“All Montana families deserve a roof over their heads and place to call home,” said Tester, Montana’s only member of the Senate Housing Committee. “Access to affordable housing provides families with the foundation they need to launch successful careers, live healthier lives, and achieve self-determination for themselves and for future generations.”

Indian Housing Block Grants fund the development and maintenance of both rental properties and dweller-owned housing. Tester voted to reauthorize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act, which created this grant program.

The awarded funds will serve the Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority. Tester has recently secured similar grants for the Blackfeet Housing Authority and the Fort Peck Housing Authority.
