Tester Dedicates Feb 11-17 National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week

Senator Highlights Outstanding Work of Montana Students, Educators

(U.S. Senate) – U.S. Senator Jon Tester is highlighting the importance of education by dedicating the week of February 11-17 as National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week.

“Tribal Colleges and Universities are vital to the success of thousands of students across Indian Country,” said Tester, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. “These schools keep students connected with their language and culture and create an unique opportunity for Native students to succeed academically.”

Montana is home to seven Tribal Colleges and Universities, the most of any state. These institutions accept thousands of Native and hundreds of non-Native students yearly.

Tester on Tuesday met with the leaders of Montana’s tribal colleges in his Washington, D.C. office.

“Tribal Colleges and Universities offer students access to knowledge and skills grounded in cultural traditions and values, including indigenous languages, which enhances Indian communities and enriches the United States as a nation,” the Senate resolution reads.

Tester has been a longtime supporter of strengthening education in Indian Country.

Last year he introduced the NEST Act, which aims to incentivize quality educators to work in Indian Country. In addition, he recently secured a grant to support curriculum to preserve native languages and cultural heritage at Blackfeet Community College.
