Tester Statement on Murphy Gun Amendment Vote

Senator Jon Tester today issued the following statement after voting against Senator Murphy’s gun amendment to the Commerce, Science, and Justice Appropriations bill:

“I support closing the background check loophole but this amendment went a step too far by making it illegal for family members to sell each other guns without a background check. In Montana, this practice is a strong part of our hunting heritage and western way of life. I will continue to support Senator Manchin’s common-sense approach to closing the loophole, and I urge the Senate to take up that bipartisan legislation quickly.”

Tester voted to close the background check loophole in 2013 and again in 2015.
