Tester meets with Anaconda’s Shawn Hansen, Montana’s 2014 Assistant Principal of the Year

Senator applauds Vice Principal’s efforts to provide Anaconda students tools for success

(U.S. SENATE) – Senator Jon Tester today met with Montana’s 2014 Assistant Principal of the Year, Shawn Hansen from Anaconda High School, to applaud his leadership and discuss his school’s success in implementing initiatives that give students the tools they need to succeed.

Tester and Hansen discussed the school’s Striving Readers Program that seeks to increase students’ literacy and has helped more students meet reading requirements. Tester and Hansen also discussed Anaconda’s innovative graduation track program that tailors graduation requirements to students’ future plans.

“Shawn is a role model for how educators can help all their students get the support they need to graduate on-time and to have bright futures,” said Tester, a former teacher. “Giving students the best possible education will prepare them for future success and strengthen our state and our nation.”

Hansen is representing Montana at the NASSP/Virco National Assistant Principal of the Year program this week in Washington, D.C. The program honors outstanding middle school and high school assistant principals who have demonstrated success in leadership, curriculum and personalization.

In addition to being Anaconda’s Vice Principal, Hansen also serves as the school’s Athletic Director.

While in Washington, D.C., Hansen is meeting and speaking with the other State Assistant Principals of the Year, national education leaders and legislators.
