Tester takes leadership role in 113th Congress

Senator to head critical Banking, Homeland Security panels

(U.S. SENATE) – Senator Jon Tester is taking a leadership role in Congress as lawmakers work to solve some of the nation’s biggest challenges.

Tester will lead the Senate Banking subcommittee that oversees the nation’s financial markets. The panel, known as the Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance, and Investment, works to ensure that financial markets are transparent and fair and that investors are adequately protected. The subcommittee also oversees government-sponsored housing organizations Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Tester will also chair the Homeland Security subcommittee dedicated to improving government efficiency and effectiveness. The panel oversees all federal agencies and departments to make sure taxpayer dollars are wisely used and federal workers are properly trained and managed.

“It’s Congress’ job to keep a close eye on federal agencies to make sure taxpayers are getting the best bang for their buck,” Tester said. “Standing up for hard-working Montanans with strong oversight is a responsibility that I take seriously, and I look forward to bringing more Montana common-sense to Washington.”

Tester will also serve on six Appropriations subcommittees that are in charge of funding the federal government. They are:

· Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration
· Energy and Water Development
· Homeland Security
· Interior and Environment
· Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education
· Military Construction and Veterans Affairs

In addition to serving on the Senate Banking, Homeland Security, and Appropriations committees, Tester also serves on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs and Indian Affairs committees.
