NBC Montana: Tester speaks to Butte veterans, residents at Memorial Day ceremony
Memorial Day ceremonies were held across Montana on Monday in honor of service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
In Butte, residents and veterans gathered to remember those lost. Veterans groups placed a wreath on the state’s Vietnam memorial at Stodden Park.
It was the first event of the morning, and it involved local officials, police, firefighters and U.S. Sen. Jon Tester speaking to the large crowd.
“Butte’s such a big part of this country and such a big part of the fabric of what the United States is,” said Tester. “The amount of patriotism and the belief that sacrifice does matter — it’s important. And Butte brings it home every day.”
During the event, Tester played taps for the first time in Butte — something he grew up doing for veteran memorial services. After his performance, the crowd cheered.
He also mentioned the new veterans treatment court that will begin on Tuesday.
Judge Robert Whelan said one of the best ways of honoring those who have died is by taking care of the living.
