'Onerous' reg thwarted for brewers, distillers, ranchers

Montana’s alcohol producers can continue to sell or give away spent grain to ranchers without added layers of bureaucracy and paperwork, thanks in part to Montana Sens. Jon Tester and John Walsh.

New rules proposed in 2013 by the FDA would have classified brewers and distillers as animal feed manufacturers because they provide ranchers with high-protein grain used in the brewing or distilling process.

Earlier this year, Montana’s senators sent a letter to the FDA demanding that the agency drop the proposal, which would have required that brewers and distillers prepare and implement a food safety plan.
