Tester statement on the defeat of the Immigration Reform Bill
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement after voting to defeat the Immigration Reform Bill. Due to lack of support, the controversial bill was pulled from consideration.
"This Immigration Reform Bill doesn't work for Montana. And it's legislation that's too broken for America. We don't need hundreds of pages of expensive new laws when we can't even enforce the once we've already got on the books.
Make no mistake, this country's immigration system needs fixing. We'll fix it by toughening security at our ports and borders and by enforcing the laws we already have. And we'll do it without giving amnesty to millions of lawbreakers.
Our Land of Opportunity isn't exclusive. Immigrants, like my grandparents, built this country. But here, no one is above the law."
