Tester Announces More Than $26 Million for Affordable Housing in Indian Country

$26,251,574 in grants awarded to Montana’s Tribal communities to expand housing initiatives

(Big Sandy, MT) – U.S. Senator Jon Tester announced that Montana’s Tribes have been awarded more than $26 million in grant funding to bolster affordable housing in Indian Country.

“All Montanans should have a place to call home, but far too many in Indian Country struggle to find one,” Tester said. “These resources will give Tribes a much-needed boost to their housing initiatives, allowing them to provide more folks with safe, affordable places to live.”

The grants are awarded under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 through the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the development and operation of low-income housing.

• Blackfeet Tribe – $6,549,078.00
• Chippewa Cree Tribe- $2,574,468.00
• Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes – $4,817,761.00
• Crow Tribe – $2,232,573.00
• Fort Belknap Indian Community – $2,161,053.00
• Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes- $5,100,112.00
• Northern Cheyenne Tribe – $2,816,529.00

Tester has long supported the development of affordable housing in Indian Country. Earlier this year, he played a key role in negotiating a budget deal that invested millions into Tribal housing initiatives. He also introduced the Tribal HUD-VASH Act to provide rental and housing assistance to homeless and at-risk Native American veterans.
