Tester Secures Nearly $5 Million to Boost Affordable Housing on Rocky Boy’s Reservation

Grant will increase safety in Indian Country

U.S. Senator Jon Tester today announced he secured a $4.9 million grant to help expand safe, affordable housing on the Rocky Boy’s Reservation.

The competitive grant is awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and will benefit the Chippewa Cree Tribe.

“Every Montanan deserves to have a place they can call home,” Tester said. “This grant will help the Chippewa Cree Tribe make that goal a reality for families, and will give more folks in Indian Country a safe, affordable place to live.”

The grant was awarded under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996.

Tester has long supported the development of affordable housing in Indian Country. Earlier this year, he secured more than $26 million to bolster affordable housing on Montana’s seven reservations, and he introduced the Tribal HUD-VASH Act this Congress, which passed the Senate in February, to formally codify Tribal HUD-VASH, providing rental and housing assistance to homeless and at-risk homeless veterans in Indian Country.
