Tester Successfully Leads Senate Resolution Commemorating Mann Gulch Fire on 75th Anniversary

Resolution designates August 5 as “Mann Gulch Memorial Tribute Day”

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the devastating Mann Gulch Fire, U.S. Senator Jon Tester last week successfully led a resolution commemorating the disaster and paying tribute to the 13 lives lost. The resolution, which passed the U.S. Senate last Thursday, designates August 5, 2024 as “Mann Gulch Memorial Tribute Day” and memorializes the 12 United States Forest Service smokejumpers and one district fire guard who lost their lives fighting the fire.

“The Mann Gulch fire is one of the most devastating wildfires in Montana’s history – and today on the 75th anniversary, it’s critical that we pay our respects to the 13 lives lost defending our forests and communities,” said Tester. “Those heroes were gone far too soon, and remain a powerful reminder of the service and sacrifice of Montana’s firefighters and first responders. Today and every day, we must remember them by honoring all of Montana’s firefighters and first responders that put their lives on the line for the safety of our communities.”
